2.0 out of 5 stars Sesame Mag is good, Parenting is poor, July 13, 2005
By Lisa Manske "natural mamma" (Wauwatosa, WI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My daughter, 1 1/2, does like the Sesame Street magazine. She also likes the Elmo dishes that came free with the subscrition. But, now I throw out the Parenting magazine without even reading it. I read the first several issues and every article was either very bland and contained simple common sense or it was just insulting. The breastfeeding advice in this magazine is horrible and goes against all the latest research. The formula ads are everywhere, despite the World Health Organization's ban on marketing formula directly to parents. I don't believe this magazine has a goal to help moms and dads be better parents. I think it's goal is to help parents feel less guilty about making poor choices that go against their family's best interest. I will NOT renew this magainze and I cannot recommend it to anyone. You will not find anything new or informative here. Save your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Helping Mothers Raise Kids, April 15, 2005
By Bryan Carey "Bryan Carey" (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Parenting is a good magazine for people who enjoy reading about child- rearing topics. This publication discusses a wide realm of subjects about raising children, with columns on education, discipline, sickness, and other relevant topics.

The strong points of this magazine include its long length, low subscription price, and wide variety/number of articles. Issues average more than 200 pages, and they are chock full of articles to read. There are often 40 or more different articles/columns in every issue, with enough variation to find something you can relate to.

There is one thing about this magazine that will cause some to reconsider a subscription: It focuses almost exclusively on mothers. Other Amazon.com writers have stated the same thing, and they are absolutely correct. Parenting assumes that the world is still living in the nineteenth century and that mothers do almost all the child rearing. There is scarcely a mention of fathers, and this is one fact that could make some people forego a subscription.

One other negative point is the frequency of advertisements. More than half the pages in each issue have ads, and it's rare to turn more than three pages in a row without seeing an advertisement. The magazine is very lengthy, so I suppose it should be expected that Parenting would need a large number of ads to gain the revenue needed for publishing. But there are still quite a few, and you get tired of seeing them after a while.

Parenting isn't perfect, but I still think it's worth an occasional peak. It does offer some interesting articles and the price is low enough that a subscription is easily justified. Add to that the grocery coupon discounts and you have a magazine that easily pays for itself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Magazine & Indifferent Customer Service, January 13, 2005
This magazine is no different from any of the mom-oriented magazines out there and I don't understand why it's called "Parenting". Our subscription is in my husband's name and it was his idea to subscribe -- he stays home with our sons and thought that a magazine called "Parenting" might have a lot of good articles that would help him with some of the things he deals with every day. Instead, what we've found is that even in articles that could have been addressed to a general parent audience, the word "mother" or "mom" or female pronouns are used throughout, when "parent" could just as easily have been used. The magazine is full of "mom tips", things for a woman's diet, ads geared toward women, assumptions that only moms cook and only moms worry about their children's health care.

All of this would be great if it were true that men turn a blind eye to their children and women live the way they did in the 1940s, but it's just not that way now. I don't know how many families live the way this magazine portrays them, but the ones I know do not. If the title of this magazine were "Just for Moms" or "Mothering" I would not be writing this. We were disgusted that the only fathering article one month, while it was kind of funny, was about penises, and in another issue there was an article which depicted a father reading a newspaper and ignoring his children. Is this really all the writers, editors, et al., know about fathers?

I wrote to the magazine about this and politely expected a response, adding that I'd like to see an article about parents who are partners in raising their children, and ads that are gender-neutral or at least evenly spaced for targeted audiences of both sexes. I asked them to respond in a timely manner so I could know whether or not to keep our subscription. It's going on two months since I sent the letter -- not a word from them, not even acknowledgement of receipt of my letter. Subscription cancelled.
