This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. [edit] Structure

This is not yet decided, just a proposal:

Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ)'s proposal:

It should be : Introduction, Date, History, Celebration

Introduction (section 0): Just a general overview of the article, like we have in most articles on Wikipedia. Just mention the most important stuff covered in all the other sections (see Wikipedia:Lead section)

Date: First of all, describe when the date is (e.g. 4th of July), and the significance of that date (e.g. when the United States declaration of independance was signed). If the date changes (e.g. Jewish holidays), put the date on the calendar where it's stationary (e.g. Purim on the 14th of Adar) and the dates for the next couple of years (we might want a table similar to that which is on Rosh Hashana). Also, the reason why the date changes if there is one (e.g. Lunar Calandar or first monday of month).

History: Put the history of this holiday. What this holiday means. We might also want to add pop culture references to this holiday if there are any. This can, of course, be multiple sections.

Celebration: What did people used to do on this holiday? What do they do now?

Remember to write in the proper style for an encyclopedic article.

Basically, most articles should have been written in this format already, as it's just most logical.

Perhaps we should add some more sections

[edit] Hierarchy definition

See #Categories.

[edit] Goals

Well, I suppose our first goal is to get this Project up and running, after that we should pick an article to re-do to make an example, and then we should restructure all Holiday articles.

{{{holiday_name}}}

NOTE: If you use this, do {{subst:HolidayInfo}} and then change the stuff to your liking (and add stuff too if you need). A good idea given by Neutrality was to change the colors depending on holiday (blue/white for jewish, green/red for christmas, national colors for national holidays, etc). Table by Neutrality. (By the way, the table looks better on the page than here).

Articles this table is currently being used in:

I've changed the infobox template {{Infobox Holiday. It looks like what you see to the right. I'm in the process of adding them to holiday pages. Your help would be appreciated. For information on using the Infobox, go to its talk page. joturner 14:26, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

it would be advantageous to have an infobox script in which the color can be manually set to suit the holiday. Some thing 21:51, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Templates

The {{WikiProject Holidays}} banner should be placed on the talk pages of all articles which fall within the scope of this project.

Perhaps templates for next holiday in the category, such as Template:JewishHolidaysIlγαηερ (Tαlκ) 20:54, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

Created Template:Holiday-stub. add where needed.Some thing 07:10, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal 1

Here's my proposal (excuse the little bit of messiness, I was in a hurry) Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 22:59, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Old Proposal <-- Old one was removed as of 21 August 2005, replaced with the new one below...

what do you think?

[edit] Proposal 2

Here's my new proposal, some things to note are:

  • Christmas is under 3 categories, because it is a national holiday in the US, it is celebrated Internationally, and it is technically a Christian holiday. It'd probably be under more (like United Kingdom National Holidays, etc.)
  • The new International Holidays Category
  • It's less messy

Any thoughts? — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 20:59, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

By the way, another category we might want to add is Humerous or Entertaining Holidays under International Holidays. Or maybe simply its own category under Holidays. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 21:16, 21 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal 3

[edit] Proposal 3a

Proposal 3a removed and replaced with Proposal 3b, by Some thing 21:56, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal 3b

This is a retailoring of Ilγαηερ's (Tαlκ) proposal and proposal 3a. i’ve tried to specify a detailed hierarchical model that will work with much of the existing categories. this is what i’ve got so far. Reasons for changing previous model:

  • cant use “national holidays” as complementary to “international holidays” see National holidays.
  • to show the greater context of how these categories interrelate.
  • to include more existing categories there by exposing issues within the nitty gritty
  • to lay out a thorough strategy
  • Category:International Holidays doesn't seem all that integral, as basically all religious holidays and most secular holidays are international. (with the exception of National holidays, though most "national holidays" are paralleled across multiple nations, for example: Independance Day). thus i might propose another version without "international" as a main trunk of the tree, but instead, to differentiate from religious and "by country" use the already existent Category:Secular holidays category.
  • Category: Humorous observances has come to include more or less subcultural observances that have little to do with humour. an example is Blue Monday (date). moving to Category: Unofficial observances would also further differentiate it from Category: Fictional holidays which seems to overlap days. maybe "Subcultural holidays" would also be apropriate...
  • the national holidays need some categorization by holiday and country.
  • remove category "public holidays" as it is hierarchically superfluous imbetween "holidays" and "public holidays by country".

thoughts, critisisms, changes, etc?Some thing 13:18, 8 March 2007
