Why do we sometimes get headaches when we eat ice cream?
The nerves at roof of the mouth overreact to the cold temperature of the ice cream and assume that the brain must need heating. To heat the brain blood vessels swell. This is what causes the ice cream headache or as I call it ‘brain freeze’. It is estimated that 30% of the population suffer from these headaches.
Muizen, ja we hebben het voor muizen tegenwoordig. Misschien is het omdat ik sinds een paar maanden een hyperactieve kat inhuis heb die niks liever doet dan Fetch spelen met haar muis. Kweet het niet maar na The Mice Templar hebben we nu ook de Hardcover van Mouse Guard, Fall 1152 in huis gehaald. En ik moet zeggen die muizen kunnen er wat van. De gelijkenis tussen de twee verhalen is op eerste zicht enorm. Beiden hebben ze muizen als hoofdrol, beiden worden ze aangevallen en duikt er een heldaftige muis uit het verleden om hen te helpen. Maar daar eindigt tochwel ge gelijkenis. De sfeer die Mice Templar uitstraalt is volledig anders dan in Mouse Guard.
In Mouse guard gaat het over de Guard, een eeuwen oude groep muizen die de steden tegen elk onheil moet beschermen. Als er aan het licht komt dat een van de muizen het stadsplan verkocht heeft aan een anonieme vijand gaan de poppen (of muizen) aan het dansen, en nee niet op de tafel. Deze indy comic is echt prachtig. Ik ga zeker het vervolg kopen Mouse Guard, Winter 1152. Maar ik ga toch wachten op de HardCover. Waarom? Ook al is Mouse Guard een goed en spannend verhaal, de single issues zijn me iets te kort en voelen echt bevredigend aan. Ik weet het, het klinkt raar. Maar omdat het een doorlopend verhaal is en het zo meeslepend is kan je echt niet wachten om het volgende nummer te lezen. Dit is echt een van de weinig comics waar ik enorm blij was dat ik in één ruk door kon lezen. En dat wil toch wel wat zeggen, denk ik.
Voor diegene die graag een fantasy verhaal lezen raad ik deze comic zeker aan. De tekeningen zijn stuk voor stuk prachtig en passen volledig bij het fantasy beeld dat rond zweeft in de comic. Een Must-Buy / Must-Read voor elke Comic fan. Op de officiele website van Mouse Guard kan je delen van de comic lezen.
Tussen het lezen van "To Terra", een superzalig retro sf-manga en "Maintenance", een hoopvolle collectie van weirde, funny en originele verhaaltjes over twee maintenace losers botste ik tussen mijn pre-orders voor november op deze "Heroes HC".
Jaja, van het gelijknamige superheroes tv-serie. Blijkbaar werden er op talloze comic-cons in de States, free comics van Heroes uitgedeeld. Deze zouden nu voor het eerst gebundeld worden. Hierboven zie je alvast de cover door Alex Ross.
DC Comics sleepte dit contract in de wacht en valt onder de vleugel van Jim Lee's Wildstorm. Gaat dit garant staan voor kwaliteit? Ik hoop alvast dat Jeph Loeb ook hier 100% zijn medewerking aan verleende. Voor zij die niet kunnen wachten, kan je op NBC online de comics lezen. Gewoon de link volgen en ... Ik wacht wel tot de HC, comics lezen op een scherm lukt me echt niet. Nieuwe afleveringen kan je vanaf 24-09-2007 op de amerikaanse buis verwachten en waarschijnlijk volgt VT4 het ook direct op, zoals vorig jaar..
Camille Rose Garcia brengt Low brow art van de bovenste plank. Haar creepy sprookjesboeken zijn telkens weer een schot in de roos. Alvast een dikke aanrader.
