Belle And Sebastian - The Blues Are Still Blue (Rough Trade)
UK release date: 3 April 2006
Every once in a while, I'm compelled to repeat a track till the point of nausea; only then is it worthy to be deemed my anthem of the week. As I perform the most menial of tasks, I tap my foot uncontrollably while mouthing lyrics I don't recall my mind ever processing. This, the second single from The Life Pursuit, is the latest gem in a long line of Belle and
Sebastian tracks to inspire this convulsive reaction.
Increasingly likeable on repeat listens, The Blues Are Still Blue is channels the glam swagger of an early '70s
David Bowie, which, when combined with a spoonful of T.Rex and half a cup of The New Pornographers (with whom the band is touring, incidentally), results in something delightfully refreshing. Belle and Sebastian are adept at whipping up tunes which, while unabashedly catchy, are anything but annoying, and this is no exception.
Groundbreaking? Hardly. Eargasmic? Definitely. This one is definitely a keeper. In fact, spoil yourself and grab the album. You won't regret it.
