About ABC Kimberley WA
The ABC's Broome studio went to air for the first time on 26 January 1990, with a staff of one! Since then we have continued an expansion program that today sees us broadcasting some 30 hours of radio each week.
Although the resident population of the region is less than 30,000, we play host to over 300,000 tourists annually. Of these, about 70% are Australian visitors from other States. Our programming therefore reflects the needs of those visitors - weather and road conditions, tides, air services, and more.
We're very proud of our association with indigenous radio groups in the Kimberley. We have been able to assist them with their aspirations to broadcast on their own transmitters at Broome, Fitzroy Crossing, Hall's Creek and Kununurra, and maintain close links, especially at such times as Naidoc Week and Stompem festivals.
