Sweet Lowdowns is a Melbourne based swing quartet which originally came together in Canberra. The band includes Sandra Talty with a vocal style that is inspired by the 1920s and who also plays drums. With her are Liam O'Connell who's influenced by the work of Django Reinhardt together with Michael McQuaid (reeds) and Richard Mander (string bass).
The music is rooted in the 1920s and 1930s and the recording is similarly old school - ancient analogue gear with valves, tapes and gizmos which would seem at home in an op shop. The Sweet Lowdowns have attempted to embody the spirit and aesthetic in which the music was written. It's raw, live and spontaneous, and very much a refreshing antidote to the overly processed recordings of much of today's contemporary music.
The name Sweet Lowdowns comes from the Gershwin tune and Woody Allen film of the same title "Sweet and Lowdown".
