We have a number of established licences and programmes to help you get the most out of material held at The National Archives:

Standard Non-exclusive Licensing

The National Archives has an established programme of non-exclusive licensing to facilitate requests for images of documents in its collections to be reproduced by third parties. Whether you want to publish records on DVD, over the web or create and publish resources for libraries and universities we can supply a licence to suit.

Typical royalty payments for commercial publication are:

Consumer On-line Services: 7% Net.

Product Development: 10% Net.

Institutional Services: 15% Net.

Licensed Internet Associateships

The National Archives continues to seek interested parties for its Licensed Internet Associates (LIA) programme of digitisation. Since 2004, we have successfully digitised millions of our most popular records in partnership with a number of commercial publishers.

If you are interested in helping us create co-branded online services which can be delivered to a global audience by getting involved with the digitisation, marketing and sale of genealogical, military and other records online, we are keen to work with you.

Royalty-based commercial reproduction rights

If you are a product designer or manufacturer, permission may be obtained to use images from The National Archives' collections for commercial reproduction on merchandise such as gifts, cards, calendars, home wares or apparel.

Typical royalty for commercial merchandising rights: 7% Net.

Fee-based commercial reproduction rights

Permission to reproduce images from The National Archives' collections in books, magazines or broadcast media is typically arranged by The National Archives image library.

Further information is available upon request from: image-library@nationalarchives.gov.uk 

We also arrange for the loan of transparencies or prints of images. You can look at a sample of the images online.

Use of The National Archives trademarks

Any use of our trademarks must be developed under license with The National Archives. All enquiries should go to licensing@nationalarchives.gov.uk
