JOINING THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S CORPS (AGC)

The AGC recruits and trains officers and soldiers to provide a wide range of professional support to the Army. Entry age and qualifications differ depending on which Branch of the AGC you wish to join and whether you join as an officer or as a soldier

ENTRY AS AN OFFICER

If you are aged between 18 and 29 with at least 5 x GCSEs (including Maths and English) and 2 x A levels and display clear leadership qualities (see below) you should consider Officer entry into the Staff & Personnel Support Branch (the Army's HR / Personnel / Business Managers, Finance Officers and Accountants) or the Royal Military Police (the Army's Police Officers).  If, in addition, you have a university degree or equivalent you might consider joining The Educational & Training Services Branch (the Army's Teachers, Education Officers and specialist Training Advisors). Officers in the Army Legal Services are all fully qualified solicitors, lawyers or barristers before they join the Army. Most officers today (but not all) have a university degree or equivalent.

As well as having the educational qualifications listed above, Army officers must demonstrate leadership potential, have good communication skills (written and verbal), be confident, outgoing, physically active and fit.

ENTRY AS A SOLDIER

If you are not able to demonstrate all the personal qualities and educational qualifications above then don't worry, there are still plenty of opportunities for you to join the Adjutant General's Corps as a soldier and pursue a career within either the Royal Military Police (RMP) or the Staff & Personnel Support (SPS) Branch.  To join you should be between 16 and 30 years of age (RMP must be a minimum of 17 years 6 months) and have a good standard of both written and spoken English.  GCSEs (Grade C) in English and Maths are preferred.

BASIC MILITARY TRAINING

Everyone in the Adjutant General's Corps is a soldier first and foremost.  Basic Military Training for RMP and SPS recruits is undertaken at the Army Training Regiment near Winchester and normally takes 12 weeks.  Here you will learn the basic military, combat and survival skills required of every soldier in the British Army.  On completion of this initial training you will be fitter and more confident than ever before and will go on to complete your specialist, professional training either at the RMP Training School in Chichester or at the Centre for HR / Admin & Finance Training, near Winchester.

HR / ADMIN & FINANCE TRAINING

SPS soldiers undertake their professional training at the Centre for HR / Admin & Finance Training at Worthy Down, near Winchester.  This covers the following:

HR / PERSONNEL & BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION. All the skills required including Pay, Personnel & Military Administration, IT and clerical support.

The training is 9 weeks long and SPS recruits leave with all the professional skills required to provide a unit of up to 700 officers and soldiers with the HR / Personnel / Business Administration & Financial Support required, as well as some heavyweight qualifications.

If you think you have what it takes to join the Adjutant General's Corps as a soldier pop into your nearest Army Careers Information Office for more details.

OFFICER TRAINING

All AGC officers undertake their initial officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) along with almost every other officer.  The RMAS Commissioning Course is 44 weeks long and equips you with a detailed insight into how the Army is organised and operates.  Some of what you will cover is below:

Command, Leadership & Management.  You will be trained to be an officer in command of soldiers; how to lead, manage and motivate them in order to get the best out of them - particularly when the going gets tough on operations or under arduous conditions.

Military Skills.  Everybody in the Army learns how to March, Map Reading & Navigation, Shooting, Personal Fitness & Physical Training, First Aid, Survival Techniques and a whole lot more.

Academic Studies.  You will study the lessons learnt from previous military campaigns, keep abreast of current international, political and military affairs, undertake management training and learn how to deal with the Press.

Team-work & Confidence Building Exercises.  Everything in the Army revolves around Team-work. This is achieved through a mix of practical, military training exercises, adventure training, sport and physical activities.

On completion of this course you will be Commissioned as an Army Officer and then attend the Young Officers' Training course specific to your branch.

THE OFFICER RECRUITING TEAM

The AGC Officer Recruiting Team consists of young officers from each Branch of the Adjutant General's Corps who can answer in detail any questions you may have.

AGC Familiarisation Visits. Nearly every week of the year we run 2-day Potential Officer Familiarisation visits at our Headquarters near Winchester.  These are aimed at 17 - 28 year olds who may be interested in a career as an Army officer in the Adjutant General's Corps. You can learn in more detail the roles and responsibilities of each Branch, visit a unit, spend time in the Officers' Mess, speak to young officers about their experiences and undertake some of the officer selection physical tests and practical assessments. If you demonstrate the potential we will organise your attendance on the Army Officer Selection Board  and if you are successful, sponsor you to Sandhurst.  We run slightly shorter courses for those studying A' Levels but importantly, also provide information on the financial assistance available at University.

If you would like more information then either contact your School or University Army Careers Advisor or ring the Officer Recruiting Team on 01962-887887 or email us at agcrls@gtnet.gov.uk

THE REGIMENTAL RECRUITING TEAM (RRT)

The AGC RRT travels the length and breadth of the UK giving presentations and hosting activity days (particularly to Business Studies / Business Administration and similar courses) at a wide variety of schools & colleges.

We also run interesting and exciting Look at Life courses where youngsters (age 15+) interested in joining the Adjutant General's Corps can come and visit, see what we have to offer, experience life as a soldier, obtain more information on exactly what is involved, and generally have a good time.  The visits last for 5 days - they're interesting, informative and best of all - they're free!  If you'd like more information then contact us on 01962-887887.
