Ann Jones, a writer, photographer and long-time women’s advocate, has teamed up with the International Rescue Committee for an innovative project aimed at giving voice to West African women who have survived conflict, displacement, discrimination and sexual violence.

Readers can sign up to receive 16 email blogs from Jones over 16 days. Each email will include one woman’s photo, her story and a chance for readers to add their own voices.

VIDEO: Somali children share their hopes and fears

In September 2007, U.N. aid workers gave video cameras to 30 Somali children who had been uprooted by fighting in Mogadishu and asked them to capture their daily life in settlements for displaced people.

The children talked of food and shelters, of clothes and education. They dreamed of being doctors, teachers and pilots. They spoke of their desire for peace.

Are journalists too soft on aid agencies?

When journalists want to know who's survived an earthquake in the Kashmir mountains, interview refugees on the run from an Afghan war zone or hitch a plane ride to Congo's eastern jungle, it's usually aid workers who help them out.

But when aid organisations cover journalists' travel costs and help with logistics - assistance that suits editors at a time of dwindling foreign news budgets - it makes it hard for reporters to remain unbiased about the agencies.
