                     Hampshire troops march through Winchester to mark their return from operations

 

 

Winchester welcome: Hampshire became the first county to welcome home its combined armed forces with a parade through Winchester. Three hundred service personnel who have recently returned from active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq took part as Hampshire paid tribute to their service. 
Led by the band of the Welsh Guards, the troops in their desert combat uniforms, marched through the High Street, past the historic Westgate to the sound of cheering crowds and the pealing Cathedral bells.

Ross Kemp making Sky TV documentry with 1 Royal Anglian in Afghanistan

Sky’s the limit for The Vikings: Television tough guy Ross Kemp spent five weeks as guest of The Vikings, 1 Royal Anglian, during their recent tour in Afghanistan. Making a hard hitting and thought provoking documentary for Sky One. Ross admitted that his time in theatre was terrifying and that he owed it to the soldiers he was able to return and tell their story.
The series starts on 21 January at 9pm.

Three police forces join up in Colchester, RMP, MDP and Essex Police

Joint force: Community policing has taken on a new meaning in Colchester as three different police forces have moved in together for the first time in the country. Members of the RMP, MOD Police and the Essex Police will now work together from the Colchester Garrison station.
Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth opened new medical failities in Afghanistan
Medical facilities have been boosted with the opening of a new hospital at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. The new Medical Treatment Facility as its known, was opened by Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth. The new MTF is housed within one of the few solid buildings at Camp Bastion, and replaces the tented field hospital that has been used since the building of the base. The temperature-controlled building allows the medics to better avoid the heat, cold or dust that come with the Helmand territory.  Below are links to two video reports, produced from material filmed by an Army News Team by ITN journalist Eric McInnes, on the opening of the new hospital and the ministerial visit.

RMP Rock Band in Basra Desert Rock: Take four military policemen add an army chef and you have music for your ears in the form of a rock band with a difference. These five soldiers, all serving in Iraq, were all musicians in their own right but had never played together, until  Lieutenant Dave Wilton hit on the idea of putting a band together to raise morale among his fellow troops and some cash for the ‘Help for Heroes’ appeal.

Get your hair cut! Just for once the Sergeant Major did not have to shout at his soldiers, they volunteered, more than 100 of them from 32 Regiment Royal Artillery in Larkhill lined up for a trim in aid of the Help for Heroes appeal. It was a snip at just £5 a head so the men got a bargain as well.

Rhys Gudgin gains award for work done organising repatriation of soldiers killed in action
Vital work: Former army officer Rhys Gudgin who is working at HQ Land Command as a consultant contractor has played an important part in organising the repatriation of soldiers killed on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His efforts have been recognised with the Commander in Chief Land Command Certificate for Meritorious Service presented by General Sir Redmond Watt.

Snow, sun and ski: Three ingredients for a hard fought competition at this year’s Exercise Spartan Hike. The Land Command ski championships now in their 23rd year test soldiers skills to the limit in Alpine (downhill) and Nordic (cross-country) events. Although the number of competitors was down due to operational commitments the standard of entry was higher than ever.

Passage to India: The Queen’s Royal Hussars’ cricket team have returned from a winter tour of India, where they played four local teams across the country – only narrowly losing a couple of the games against some first-class opposition.

Soldiers on a slippery slope in Canada: Seventy soldiers from across the Army took part in this year’s Ice Camp, in Calgary, Canada. The Army’s annual Ice Camp gives novices the opportunity to try their hand at bobsleigh, luge (feet first on a sledge) and skeleton bob (head first on a tray). For the novice, these events are an extreme test of nerve and bravery, demanding total commitment.

Surfing the slopes: The ever growing popularity of snowboarding was reflected in the 140 competitors that took part in this year’s army championships on Stubai Glacier in the Austrian Alps during December. 
Winter sports are popular with young soldiers, both male and female, as they require physical fitness and mental agility when they are travelling downhill at speed.
