Hack Center

From FOSS.IN/2007

The Hack Center is a new addition to FOSS.IN this year.

It is a large area which will be open throughout the conference duration, from 9:30am to 6:30pm, where people can get together to work on FOSS projects.

The Center will be provided with PCs, power, switched networks and internet connectivity, tables and chairs.

Contents

[edit] Working Hours

The Hack Center will open on all days (including the project days) from 9:30 AM till 6:30 PM.

To make effective use of the Hack Center, you should register time for your project/task before it starts up for the day (or on the previous day). The slots are offered up purely on first come. first serve.

Multiple projects are welcome to work without disrupting other work.

[edit] Resources

The area will be blanketed in WiFi access for easy laptop use and wired access will be provided to allow fast(er) network access between the local machines. To ease the use of laptops, there will be tables with power strips. The availability of desktop hardware is likely to be minimal and it is advisable not to depend on it for work.

[edit] Suggested Activities

All speakers discussing hands-on topics are encouraged to book some time afterwards to help potential contributors get upto speed. But the focus of the Hack Center is to get something specific done.

For example, a crowd of kernel hackers getting together to hack up a new wireless driver for a particular chipset.

[edit] Rules

There are a few rules that are expected to be followed:

  1. This is not a download or surfing centre. People are not expected to settle in and use the bandwidth to download stuff from the net. The area is provided for people to get together to work on FOSS projects.
  2. PCs provided will be few. In general, there will be one PC per group - people are encouraged to bring their own laptops.
  3. This is not a general community assembly hall. People are requested to only use this hall for actual development work, not for general sit-downs and discussions. For discussions, BoF tents are provided.
  4. Please keep the area clean. Do not bring food or drinks into the place, and please clean up your area when you leave.
