[edit] Main Conference Inauguration Press Release

[edit] FOSS.IN conference Inauguration today!

Bangalore, 06-Dec-2007: FOSS.IN, India's largest and most focused conference about open source software is being inaugurated today, at the National Science Symposium Center, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

In the past, the event has attracted thousands of participants and the speaker roster of previous years reads like a "Who's Who" of FOSS contributors from across the world. After the phenomenal success of previous FOSS.in conferences, this year the event offers even more.

The conference has aimed to facilitate Indian contributions to FOSS and encourage new contributors. This edition of the conference is about contributions to Open Source Software (OSS) projects, with talks by OSS contributors and meant for existing and new OSS contributors.

Preceding the main conference FOSS.IN this year were project days that were held on 4th and 5th December The project days were tremendously popular full day sessions on a single FOSS topic. Led by leaders/contributers, the project day sessions exposed the audience to the current state and future plans of the projects, the participants were guided as to when and how they can participate and contribute to these FOSS projects.

The main conference which starts today will focus on self contained sessions. The talk slots have been increased to 90 minutes each and the talks will be given by recognized experts. There will also be a system of feedback/rating that will allow more audience interaction and will also act as a reference for the speakers.

The list of speakers as always is quite impressive with stalwarts like - Harald Welte, Andrew Cowie, Naba Kumar, James Morris, Holger Hans, Peter Freyther, Rusty Russel, Rene Ejury, Thomas Gleixner, Simon Haysmann, Kevin Ottens, Lennart Poettering, Danese Cooper, Roger Brinkley, Colin Charles, Mitchell Baker, Josh Berkus, Till Adams, Volker Krause, Ulrich Drepper, Rasmus Lerdorf, Sam Hocevar, Jim Grisanzio to name a few.

The Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies is the principal sponsor of the event, and corporate giants like Sun, Geodesic, Google, Citrix, Zimbra IBM.

RedHat, Hewlett Packard (HP), ABB, Akamai Technologies, Trolltech, Spike Source, Cybermedia Group, ZeOmega, IOSN, Cyberoam have also pitched in to support the event as sponsors.

[edit] FOSS.IN/2007 set to take off

Bangalore, 15-Nov-2007:FOSS.IN, one of the world's largest and focussed FOSS event is scheduled to be held from Dec 4 - 8 2007 at the National Science Symposium Center, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

In the past, the event has attracted thousands of participants and the speaker roster of previous years reads like a "Who's Who" of FOSS contributors from across the world. After the phenomenal success of previous FOSS.in conferences, this year the event offers even more. The entire event will be for 5 days that are divided into main conference and project days.

The conference has aimed to facilitate Indian contributions to FOSS and encourage new contributors. This edition of the conference is about contributions to Open Source Software (OSS) projects, with talks by OSS contributors and meant for existing and new OSS contributors.

The main conference this year will focus on self contained sessions. The talk slots have been increased to 90 minutes each and the talks will be given by recognised experts. There will also be a system of feedback/rating that will allow more audience interaction and will also act as a reference for the speakers.

The Project Days (PDs) scheduled on Dec 4 and 5 are really mini conferences. They are full day sessions on a single FOSS topic. Led by leaders/contributers, the project day sessions will expose the audience to the current state and future plans of the project and will guide the participants as to when and how they can get involved. Project day sessions will have people from KDE, Gnome, OpenOffice, Indlinux and other similar projects.

Both the Main conference and Project Days will focus on development and contribution to FOSS Projects. General talks will be limited to a few, taking the event a step higher.

FOSS.in is now in is ninth year. It began its journey in a very small way in 1999, the year when it was first launched at Bangalore IT.COM’s Linux Pavilion. Year 2000 received an even bigger response at IT.com which made the group of people organizing consider an exclusive free software focused event and thus Linux Bangalore was launched in 2001. Linux Bangalore was conducted for four years, after which it was repositioned as FOSS.IN in 2005, to address the wider scope of Free and Open Source Software. Almost 3000 delegates attended the event in 2005. The term FOSS refers to technologies whereby the source code of software is freely distributed to the world. Licensed to be freely used and modified, Fee and Open Source Software is getting extremely popular in India.

The event is non-commercial in nature, and is run by enthusiasts and volunteers from the FOSS world. It is funded by industry, government and academia.

Sun and Geodesic are the platinum sponsor of FOSS.IN/2007 where as Google, Citrix and Zimbra are Gold sponsors.
