Frequently Asked Questions

What is Quicksilver?

What kind of stuff can I do?

Are there any plans to port Quicksilver?

* No. If you are running Windows, Launchy is a good alternative. For Linux/GNOME there's Deskbar and GNOME Launch Box, For KDE there is Katapult.

What license is Quicksilver released under? Is it just a demo for what will later become a paid program?

  • IIRC, there is a license agreement step upon initial installation. The agreement may be viewed there. AFAICT, plans for the future of the program are unknown – IIRC, some discussions of this have happened in the forums. Perhaps a search there might be fruitful in shedding some light on this matter.

Is there a universal binary or Intel Mac support available for Quicksilver?

  • Yes. Quicksilver and most plug-ins are universal binaries.

How do I tell if a particular plug-in I have installed is a Universal Binary?

  • Find the plug-in's corresponding bundle (folder w/ name ending in .qsplugin) in ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/PlugIns/, select it, apply the Finder's 'Get Info' command, and observer the associated value for the field 'Kind'. See also Determining Whether a Binary Is Universal.

Where do I find a version for MacOS 10.3 (10.3.9)?

(at least ß36 works there. What is the last version which works? For upgrades: Is it enough to replace the app and leave the prefs and plugins wherever they are? The current (3758, ß48) did not start here.)

Where do I download the latest version?

Why doesn't Quicksilver update itself properly?

This probably means that you do not have write access to the Applications folder. This is the case when you are running as a user without administrator privileges or, less commonly, if you have a permissions problem. In the latter case, try the “Repair disk permissions” command in the Disk Utility application, which should fix the problem. If you are running without admin privileges, you must manually download and install Quicksilver; see “Where do I download the latest version?” above.

  • Additionally, one of the B49 prereleases (3766?) was unable to update itself. Download the latest from http://getqs.com/dev

Plug-in Install Step Just Hangs Answer to same question earlier is below. However, I can't find a QuickSilver folder in ~/Library/Application Support; apparently this folder wasn't created when I installed QuickSilver. I'm using a MacBook Pro.

Installing PlugIns

Problem: Quicksilver starts installing PlugIns but hangs just when the progress bar is full. Happened on two first time installs of QS.3758 on Tiger 10.4.5 PPC. Solution: change the owner of the QuickSilver folder in ~/Library/Application Support. It is set to “System” but needs to be set to yourself. You can do that by doing a “Get Info” on the QuickSilver folder. Look at Ownership & Permissions and click the little lock icon before changing the Owner.

Who controls/develops the plug-ins?

If I have a problem with a plug-in, where should I go for more information? Will the plug-ins be put on the google code site?

Where can I go to find plug-in documentation?
