Troubleshooting

This document is intended to help you resolve common problems with Quicksilver. If you ran into a well-defined problem in Quicksilver and fixed it (either by yourself or with help from the forums), please list it here. If there are related forum posts, please list them too.

Troubleshooting Techniques

  • Hold down option when launching. This will cause QS to print out a huge amount of information to the Console
  • Crash Logs When Quicksilver crashes, it will write logs to ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Quicksilver.crash.log

Common Problems

Startup

  • Problem: Quicksilver crashes shortly after launch.
  • Solution: Hold down option when launching and observe the Console. If you can see that it is stalling on a certain plug-in, try removing that plug-in and launching Quicksilver again.

Installing PlugIns

  • Problem: Quicksilver starts installing PlugIns but hangs just when the progress bar is full. Happened on two first time installs of QS.3758 on Tiger 10.4.5 PPC.
  • Solution: change the owner of the QuickSilver folder in ~/Library/Application Support. It is set to “System” but needs to be set to yourself. You can do that by doing a “Get Info” on the QuickSilver folder. Look at Ownership & Permissions and click the little lock icon before changing the Owner.

Matching

  • Problem: Quicksilver doesn't seem to remember my choices. For example, say I type sa and a bunch of results come up and Safari is among them, and I choose Safari. Next time I type sa Safari should come up by default, but it doesn't.
  • Solution: After you've searched, you can right click on the item you want to be default and choose the Make Default menu or when you've selected an item in Quicksilver you can use the Assign Abbreviation action on it to make it the default object for that abbreviation (note that the Assign Abbreviation is available only when beta features are enabled).
  • Note: By default Quicksilver does remember your choices, but you can use the solution outlined here to speed up the process if Quicksilver isn't learning fast enough or is being stubborn. As noted in the second thread below, the Make Default action is available for actions as well.

Activation

  • Problem: Quicksilver activates on more than one machine when using Synergy (not the iTunes one) and Modifier-only Activation
  • Possible Solution: Use HotKey activation instead

Freezing/Crashing

  • Problem: Quicksilver is showing the beach ball, not responding or using huge amounts of the CPU.
  • Solution: You can use the Activity Monitor to sample it. Select QS, and then choose sample from the Process menu. If you see that it is doing something related to a plug-in, try removing that plug-in and restarting Quicksilver (use Activity Monitor to force quit if required).

You may also have problems with Haxies. Disable MenuMaster for QuickSilver if you are running it.

Updating

  • Problem: Quicksilver finds a new update immediately after you've updated and relaunched multiple times.
  • Solution: Repair permissions because you may not have the correct read/write access for the Applications folder.

Features

These problems relate to specific features of Quicksilver.

Triggers

  • Problem: A trigger I created no longer responds correctly, but it's still there.
  • Solution: Remake the trigger.
  • Note: This seems to happen especially with triggers acting on iTunes objects like playlists. In that case, try restarting QS and iTunes then remaking the trigger.

iTunes Notification

  • Problem: I read about iTunes notification, but it doesn't seem to work.
  • Solution: In the iTunes preferences, make sure you select Monitor Recent Tracks and Display Track Notifications.
