Xserve is a high-performance, affordable solution for delivering powerful file and print services to Mac, Windows and UNIX systems throughout your organization. And it includes an unlimited-client version of Mac OS X Server software so theres no per-user or per-device CALs which dramatically reduces your total cost of ownership.
Cross-platform file and print services are built in to Mac OS X Server, Apples UNIX-based server operating system. An intuitive user interface, advanced security capabilities and directory-based user quotas make it easier than ever to manage and share network resources. And robust remote administration tools allow you to configure services, change settings or permissions and view system traffic from virtually anywhere on the Internet.
Apple has integrated the NT Domain services in Samba 3 with Open Directory, the standards-based directory services and authentication architecture built into Mac OS X Server. Now you can set up Mac OS X Server as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) to provide login and authentication of Windows clients on your network. PDC support also makes it possible for Mac OS X Server to host roaming profiles and network home directories for Windows clients. Shared folders hosted on Mac OS X Server appear in the Network Neighborhood of Windows clients. Secure single sign-on allows users to log in once, with a single user name and password, and gain authenticated access to all authorized network resources. Best-in-class management tools provide easy set up for these features.
An Affordable NAS Alternative
With low-cost storage, built-in services and no per-seat licensing fees, Xserve and Xserve RAID offer an affordable alternative to Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems, without compromising on performance or capacity. You can even create multiple storage volumes on Xserve RAID and use the built-in LUN mapping capability to provide dedicated storage to up to four different Xserve systems.
File and Print Features | |
---|---|
Cross-platform file services using AFP, SMB/CIFS (Samba) and NFS | Native file sharing protocols for Mac, Windows and UNIX clients make it easy to share files and network storage in multiplatform environments. |
Cross-platform printer sharing using LPR, SMB, IPP and AppleTalk PAP | Provides unified management of print jobs and sharing of PostScript printers between Mac, Windows and UNIX clients. |
Authenticated FTP services | Enables users on any platform to share files more securely over the Internet. |
Disk and print quotas | Allow administrators to manage network resources by placing per-user limits on network storage and printers. |
Secure single sign-on | Allows users to log in once, with a single user name and password, and gain authenticated access to all authorized network resources. Single sign on uses the integrated Kerberos authentication authority in Open Directory 2. |
Open Directory | Offers a robust, easy-to-configure LDAPv3 directory server and authorization authority for organizations that dont yet have a directory server. |
Encrypted file sharing (AFP over SSH) | Enables Mac OS X users to securely share documents over the Internet using 128-bit encryption. |
PDC Support (Windows) | Now you can set up Mac OS X Server as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) to provide login and authentication of Windows clients on your network. |
webDAV | Originally designed for collaborative web publishing, this enhancement to the HTTP protocol turns a website into a document database, enabling collaborative creation, editing, and searching from the web. |
NFS resharing using AFP | Gives Mac clients access to enterprise storage devices using the secure authentication and service discovery of an AFP connection. |
Network-based home directories | Allow users to log in to any Mac OS X computer on the network and instantly access their own documents, applications, individual settings and complete desktop environment. |
Server file system journaling | Enhances availability and fault resilience by protecting file system integrity during an unplanned shutdown. It also helps to maximize server and storage uptime by expediting repairs to the volumes when the system restarts. |
Unlimited-client license | Eliminates per-user client access licensing fees, for a dramatically lower total cost of ownership. |
Remote set up and monitoring tools | Make it easy to manage network services from any Mac OS X computer, anywhere on the Internet. Detailed usage and performance data can help you plan allocation of server resources and respond better to the workflow needs of your network clients. |
