French Émigrés

An influx of French refugees between 1789 and 1814 produced much government concern and the passing of the first Aliens Act in 1793. Treasury Pay Lists in T 50/57-75 contain material on French ships and the expenses of refugees. The Bouillon Papers contain information on émigrés, particularly HO 69/33-38. There are also two lists of refugees in Jersey dated 1793 to 1796 in FO 95/602-603. Records of the French Refugee and Relief Committee can be found in T 93 and cover the period from 1792 to 1823. There are accounts, letter books, memorials and pension lists.
