Newmont has No Permit for Tailings Waste
PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (NMR) had no permit for disposal of tailings waste between 17 April 2000 and 16 April 2001. The former Minister for the Environment, Sony Keraf, stated this when testifying during the court proceedings of WALHI’s suit against PT NMR in the South Jakarta State Court (26/07). Sony Keraf made this acknowledgement because on 17 April 2000, PT NMR permanently submitted their tailings disposal permit to the Ministry for the Environment.    more» | 25 Aug 2007

Palu, Central Sulawesi – Flashfloods accompanied by landslides affected settlements in four districts in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. Activists of environmental and human rights organizations performed a protest in front of the Marriot Hotel building in Denver on August 30th 2007. The reason was that the fact that Denver University gave CEO of Newmont Mining Company, Wayne Murdy, an award in human rights issue that very day. Jakarta, December 18, 2007 – The South Jakarta District Court decision on case Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI) against PT Newmont Minahasa Raya’s (NMR) – gold mining operation at Nort Sulawesi’s Buyat Bay, Tuesday (18/12), failed to meet ecology justice, said Chalid Muhammad, National Executive Director of WALHI, after the court rejected all lawsuit of WALHI against NMR. Indonesian People Conference, started today, July 1st 2007, participated by more than 1800 participants from all over Indonesia. Participants came from various communities, mostly are plantation farmers and fishermen. Loud applause and yell have been heard since the keynote speakers delivered their speeches. The Opening of IPC was made lively by Tanjidor Group
Indonesian People Conference (KRI) was opened at 09.00 WIB in Pilgrim Dormitory, Pondok Gede, Jakarta and was made lively by Tanjidor Group and teatherical action. This conference has a lot to say about issues that have to be dealt by the society as a result of miss management of environment executed by the government.
