The Virtual library of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

A wealth of information

"FAO's information clients (its Members, the international community and the public at large) will continue to require timely and relevant information in support of decision-making and policy development. The communications revolution has created an ever more quality-conscious external environment, requiring greater attention to the improvement of information products."

Corporate Strategies II, The Strategic Framework for FAO, 2000-2015

Listed below are the four options for the search and retrieval of publications and documents produced by FAO:

The FAO Corporate Document Repository

The FAO Corporate Document Repository is an electronic library that holds FAO’s huge collection of publications and meeting documents in full-text, electronic format.

Since the initiative started in 1998, over 6 000 documents have been converted into HTML allowing users to download valuable agricultural formation from anywhere in the world, free of charge.

Several types of search facilities allow users to look for documents using a combination of search fields such as title, language, publication year and keywords.

Once the publication has been located, it can be viewed on line, downloaded as a PDF file or purchased in hard copy if for sale.

FAO library catalogue on-line

The FAO on-line catalogue (FAOBIB) is a multilingual, on-line catalogue of documents and publications produced by FAO since 1945, books added to the library collections since 1976, and serials held in the FAO library.

Full text links are provided for all documents that are available in the Corporate Document Repository. Requests for copies of FAO documents in print or microfiche (pre-1998) may be addressed to the library

The database can be searched in simple, advanced and command mode. A thesaurus mode can also be implemented which allows for navigation through AGROVOC and flagging of terms for inclusion in any query. AGROVOC is the multilingual agricultural thesaurus developed by FAO and used to index items in the database. Advanced searches can be made including fields like title, author, language, publication year, publication type and others.

Selected records can be exported for reuse.
