Sun-kissed Sands In A Nutshell

Thanks to a drawn out coastline that extends from one end to the other of Kerala, 9 out of its 14 districts have a beach to boast about. The 590 km long shoreline of this leaf-shaped state of southern India, is a hearth of some of the best beaches of the world, many of which are indispensably linked with land's history. Here one can easily witness the footprints of ancient travellers, engraved deeply on the sands of time and memory of locales. Cochin, also called the 'Queen of Arabian Sea' has the best natural harbour in the country. Once an obscure fishing hamlet, the historic fort at Kochi was the first European township in India. And on the Malabar coastline, the imposing Bekal fort, which stands on a 35 acre headland that runs right into the heart of Arabian Sea, is the largest and the best preserved fort in the country.

In the nights, the megalomaniac sea composes a symphony of magic, the plankton in the waters causing phosphorescence, which glitters like fairy lights and gives the impression of stars spread under one's feet. Days are colourful too. Tourists can enjoy their hearts out by indulging in some of the most exciting sea adventures in India - snorkelling, kayaking, swimming, para-sailing, wind surfing and fishing. If you are lucky, you will get to see the dolphins do their grand act at the Cherai beach. Applaud them as they spring out of the waters with a magnificent splash, only to take a marvelous dive back into it. Jogging on a beach is believed to be a great activity with both physical and psychological benefits but if one is not careful, it may cause musculo-skeletal problems.

On Kerala's beaches, you can tan your skin in the glory of the sun or bask in the splendour of the sunset. Every year the 'Oruma' annual beach festival at Thrissur attracts a lot of tourists from all around the world. Come to Kerala and watch the magnificent procession of 21 caparisoned elephants, accompanied by a splendid percussion concert by hundreds of folk artistes. A fire-works display in the end is just a visitor's delight.

What's Hot In Kerala

Recently, the Government has taken numerous initiatives to augment the future of beach tourism in Kerala. As was in the news, it is preparing to close a deal with the Indian Navy to acquire land for the upheaval of the main road en route the Shanghumukhom beach in Trivandrum. The proposal is part of the beach beautification project according to which the existing road would be shifted back from the beach, leaving space for the creation of a leisure and recreation zone. The government is also planning to construct bus bays and parking facilities at both ends of the stretch.
