MONICA ATTARD: This week we revisit an interview with human rights lawyer Julian Burnside QC about his passionate, and at times controversial, defence of unpopular minorities.

The prominent barrister speaks about the great personal cost of speaking out on political issues - a fact detailed in his new book, Watching Brief. He expresses some sympathy for the position of his colleague, Peter Faris QC, who was under investigation after speaking out about drug use amongst lawyers, but Julian Burnside has some views on the topic that some might find surprising.   [ more ]

The Great Dissenter: Justice Michael Kirby. [25/11/2007]
Tonight, the first of a two-part interview with the soon to retire High Court judge, Justice Michael Kirby.

Justice Michael Kirby has had an extraordinary career in the law. He's Australia's longest-serving judge and he's been on the High Court bench for 12 years, in which time he's earned himself the nickname "the great dissenter". That's a label he's not altogether uncomfortable with. Indeed, he calls himself a minority of one on a largely conservative bench moulded by the Howard Government.   [ more ]

Australia's war on terror: Defence Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson and Shadow Minister for Defence, Joel Fitzgibbon [11/11/2007]
Tragically, Australia has lost three soldiers in Afghanistan and two in the past three weeks. And with an election upon us, our presence in that country and in Iraq is again being questioned. Tonight, I speak with Federal Defence Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson, and his counterpart in Opposition, Joel Fitzgibbon, about their future plans for Australia's role in the so-called war on terror.   [ more ]

Their claim was that interest rates would be lower under the Coalition than under Labor, and we were sort of disappointed, but there was no way I could speak out.

For decades the Labor party would say: You just don't want to be a Liberal, because they are nasty, terribly unfeeling, uncharitable, toffee nosed, rich people. I think Peter still suffers from that.

Jackie Kelly MP

I think federalism has to be completely recast in this country. You can either go back and try and make federalism work... or you can move, as I believe we will, to a national framework, with states increasingly becoming service deliverers.

Peter Costello, Treasurer

They go out bush together, they sleep next to each other, they've just got that mateship and I guess I was always jealous of that... I never understood it when Jake was here.
