Pratibha Parmar's first narrative film is the story of Shanti, a streetwise East End girl, who is regularly harassed by local National Front boys until one evening when the mysterious Memsahib Rita appears. Memsahib Rita is an elusive mother figure who brings together the best aspects of an Asian movie star and a Hollywood femme fatale. She comes to Shanti's defense on the anniversary of her mother's death.
