The "Man" to whom the title refers is Cecil Williams, a former school teacher and theater director who was also a Communist, anti-apartheid activist and gay man in the historically intolerant South Africa of the 1940s and '50s. He played an unfortunately important role in the events leading to Nelson Mandela's twenty-eight year imprisonment, posing as his chauffeur as Mandela attempted to re-enter South Africa upon returning from a fundraising tour. This film examines that country's constitutional protection of the civil rights of gays and lesbians, and purports that Mandela's relationship with Williams contributed to its inception.
