Picnic spots

Everybody loves a picnic and there are plenty of prime picnic spots to enjoy in and around Brisbane. This top ten list was compiled by Channel 9’s Saturday Afternoon program.

Top ten picnic spots

in no particular order...

  1. In the City's south west at Seventeen Mile Rocks is Rocks Riverside Park. The adventure playgrounds and bike paths make it a hit with families. And there's plenty of BBQ facilities and amenities.
  2. Head towards Ipswich to one of the area's prettiest spots. Colleges Crossing is popular, particularly with families, because there's just so much space! Nestled beside the Brisbane River, its facilities include BBQs, covered seating, amenities and even a playground. And if you like your picnic with a hint of adventure then you can hire a canoe on Sundays from Colleges Crossing Canoe hire.
  3. Roma Street Parklands
  4. If you're looking for a romantic position that's close and easy to get to, then take a ferry to the Holman Street Terminal. This is one of the city's hidden gems. Resting beneath the glorious Story Bridge, there are BBQs, undercover seating and amenities. Plus there are terrific views of the river and city.
  5. And if you want to stay close to the city, don't forget New Farm Park. There's plenty of grass to lay your rug, it has one of the best children's playgrounds around and is also accessible by ferry.
  6. Across the river are the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. The views are fantastic and you can ride off that big picnic lunch along the bike track. There's plenty of covered seating and gas BBQs.

  1. And right in the heart of the city is a great public space, Roma Street Parkland. Wide open spaces perfect for a picnic or barbecue, children’s play stations, unique artwork and fabulous city views ensure there’s something for everyone. Anyone who appreciates plants and gardens will enjoy this spot. It's easy to get to via train or bus being just next to Roma Street train station.
  2. If you're in charge of organising an extended family get together, gather the troops and head to Wellington Point. There's plenty of areas, much of it with shelter, BBQ facilities, and a beautiful view of Moreton Bay. You can even bring your four legged family members, just not on the weekends or public holidays. A boat would go well here too.
  3. Kalinga Park in Clayfield is another great spot for a picnic with kids. It's got a huge sandpit, a series of Aussie looking tree houses and a climbing wall. We suggest you get in early to secure one of the shelters.
  4. If you want to head for the hills then visit Jolly's Lookout on Mt Nebo Rd in The Gap. This is a beautiful picnic spot with great views and BBQ facilities.
  5. And finally there's Pelican Park at Clontarf. At 10am each day, visitors can watch pelican feeding. It's also home to the Liberty Swing - a revolutionary concept in playground equipment for people in wheelchairs, and it has all the facilities you need.

Thanks to Channel 9’s Saturday Afternoon program for this compilation.
