Terms of Service

This part of the Serving Soldier web site is designed to help you understand the Terms of Service which apply to you, as a soldier, wherever you are serving. They apply to soldiers serving in both the Regular and Territorial Army (TA) and to Reservists on Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS), except those serving on a Military Local Service Engagement (MLSE). If you are serving on another engagement (e.g. Home Service or Local Service), you should enquire at your Administrative Office for further details, as some of these guidelines will not apply to you.

'Terms' are the rules which cover enlistment, commissions, promotions, engagements and other career aspects.

Bullet Point Terms of Service - Soldiers - Terms of Service are the rules and regulations that underpin the career structure. The 'life blood' of the career structure is promotion, which provides the means to man appointments and is used as the primary, but not only, reward mechanism. With promotion comes an increase in responsibility, status and salary..

Bullet Point Terms of Service - Officers - The Officer career structure is divided into 3 complementary elements: Direct Entry (DE), Late Entry (LE) and Professionally Qualified Officers (PQOs). All have different Terms of Service, regulated by commission types and promotion rules.

Bullet Point Financial Retention Incentives - Two schemes offering cash lump sums for staying in the Army.

Bullet Point TA and the Reserves - The Directorate of Manning (Army) is responsible for the Terms of Service governing the TA and Reserves specifically Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS).

Bullet Point Discipline and Military Law - Military law and the enforcement of discipline in the Army, including: Summary Dealing, Courts Martial, the Standing Civilian Court, Army Legal Services, the Army substance misuse policy and compulsory drug testing programme.
