A little scream pop from the Hollywood gents should go a long way. 30 Seconds from Mars re-release From Yesterday as they continue to promote their album A Beautiful Lie.
The synth, guitar, drums and vocals layer themselves until the chorus explodes with unbridled emotional energy. It's pretty predictable stuff with absurd, metaphorical, repetitive lyrics but its exposed personal vocal performance is its unique selling point.
Jared Leto's epic and immediate vocals are bothered a little bit by some unnecessary auto-tuning effects here and there but is otherwise quite slick and draws you in. He can be forgiven when the top end of his range and rage cracks, after all it creates a more engaging effect.
Leto's voice combined with the grand melody of the track captures a yearning for ululant cries of "From Yesteday!". However, there is nothing exceptional about the effort and it ultimately feels like all of that energy has been wasted on a fairly formulaic single.
