how it works

Goodreads is a free website that allows you to see what your friends are reading. You can add and review books that you are currently reading, going to read, or already read. You can also read reviews by people who aren't in your friend network.

Signing up is simple — you just enter your name, email, and a password.

add your books

Catalogue your books on Goodreads by browsing or by searching for them. If the book is on Amazon you'll find it (and they carry almost everything) — if not, then manually add it to my books. Then add the book to my books. You can also optionally add a rating, a review, the date you read the book, if you have a copy to sell/swap, and which shelves to put it on.

friend recommendations

Goodreads' mission is to make reading fun by letting you see what your friends are reading. Whenever you view a book, we always show you your friends' reviews first. When you login, the home page will show all the latest reviews from your friends. If you decide to browse you can see popular and unpopular books in your friend network.

organize your books

You can create your own bookshelves. From classics and canadabooks to childrenslit and geek, you can create any category that suits your personal taste. Our favorite shelves out there? To-read, to-reread, guiltypleasures, chicklit and overrated-drivel. Have you tried out the covers view in "my books"? It's brilliant — if we may say so. Also check out the reviews view for faster book shelving.

add your books to your website

Add what you are currently reading and your recent reviews to your MySpace profile, blog or website using our recent reviews widget. A widget is a dynamic image that you can add to almost any site that allows html code. Try it out!

import/export your books

Export your books to a spreadsheet. Or if you are using another book database, import it! If we don't currently support your book database — contact us - and we'll make it happen.

list mania!

Browse by popular books, unpopular books, popular books among your friends, unpopular books among your friends, top readers or recent reviews. Who knew that everyone hated The Scarlet Letter?

groups

Groups are the perfect way to bring a group of people together to discuss literature. Groups are perfect for close friends, organizations, local book clubs, university alumni, or just about any group conceivable. Groups can be public, moderated, restricted by domain, or secret.
