Valentine’s Day

A Brisbane love story, with all the trimmings.

Valentine’s Day in Brisbane

Thursday 14 February 2008

A single flowerRomance. We all love it, but we don’t always practise it in the hurly burly of everyday life. Make this Valentine’s Day the day you get in touch with your inner cupid. Become the volcano lover you’ve always aspired to be! Spice up your love life by posting a sexy (or sentimental) card, sending a bunch of flowers, catching a romantic movie or booking a restaurant. On Valentine’s Day it’s all red hearts, chocolates, flowers and well-aimed arrows. Bull’s eye!

Browse our special Valentine's events calendar for some romantic suggestions on where to go and what to do.

Brisbane restaurants

Dare to be different. Go beyond your usual dining haunts and take the love of your life to a restaurant where the ambience is relaxed and intimate, and cupid is in the cuisine. We’ve put together a selection of Brisbane eateries where the food is fabulous and romance rules. Book now to get a cosy table for two.

A night to remember

Why stop at candle-lit wining and dining? Go that extra romantic mile and take your loved one to a luxurious hotel for the night. Or escape for a romantic weekend together.

Or surprise your Valentine with a romantic Riverlife night kayak. Share a one and a half hour guided kayak under Brisbane’s captivating city lights, then dine on gourmet canapes and fine wine or succulent ocean king prawns and beer. What a choice!

Flowers: the language of love

Say it with flowers. The practice of using floral emblems to convey all manner of meaning (coquetry, dalliance and eternal love – to name just a few) is still in vogue. You can’t go wrong with red roses (“I love you”) or white camellias (“You’re adorable”), and if you harbour a secret love for someone, send agapanthus. To arrange your floral missive, check our directory – it lists dozens of Brisbane florists.

Rendezvous with Romance Ball

Neon love signBe captivated – with death-defying acts, dazzling costumes and breath-taking special effects – at the Mater Foundation’s annual Rendezvous with Romance Valentine’s Ball. It’s black-tie romance of the highest calibre.

Cinema & theatre

Take your loved one to an R-rated (strong romantic themes and language) movie! Head to Moonlight Cinema in the grounds of the Brisbane Powerhouse. On Thursday 14 February you and your beloved can watch P.S. I love you.

February 14 (Valentine’s Day) will see the releases of two romantic comedies: Definitely Maybe, starring Ryan Reynolds and Isla Fisher, and Dan in Real Life, starring Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche. See our movie guide for session times.

Or head to the intimate, relaxed space of the Thomas Dixon Centre for an interlude with dance – in all its forms. Queensland Ballet’s Vis-à-vis Studio Series, which opens on Valentine’s Day, showcases different aspects of dance in a series of short works. It’s informative, entertaining and great for a date!

If ever there was a story celebrating the highs and lows of passionate love, it’s Phantom of the Opera – the most popular musical of all time. Now playing at QPAC, this sumptuous production encompasses melodrama, passion and spine-tingling music. Book your Valentine’s Day tickets now.

Free love

Rediscover romance through the memorabilia of nine different love stories. Travelling for Love is an exhibition of letters, diaries, photographs and artworks from nine couples who have travelled in and out of Queensland to be with the ones they love. It opens on Valentine’s Day at the State Library of Queensland – and it’s free!

High Tea

Take your Valentine to GoMA’s Foyer Bistro for High Tea – with a difference. Choose between two special High Tea menus – the Andy W & the Jackie O – created to celebrate the current Andy Warhol exhibition. (Book NOW to ensure your place.) Forget cucumber sandwiches and scones with jam, the delectable menu is themed around the art works of this iconic artist. Afterwards, take in the works of art that inspired the food!

Shingle Inn comes to the rescue of Valentines struggling to reveal their true feelings on Valentine’s Day with their ever-popular Sweetheart biscuits bearing the very simple message – I love you. Check their website for a Shingle Inn near you.
