Fyfe Dangerfield may have a very silly name, but my God can he write a song. As if the gloriously exuberant Trains To Brazil and the majestically swooping We're Here hadn't already convinced you that Guillemots are ridiculously talented, then along comes one of the singles of 2006 to grab your heart with both hands and tear it to bits.
Made Up Love Song #43 is just beautiful, featuring our man Fyfe paying tribute to the "symmetry of your northern grin", and being so in love that he sees "poetry in an empty coke can" and "majesty in a burnt out caravan". Like the rest of the Guillemots' songs there's a wide variety of unusual instrumentation and odd noises in the background, but most importantly it has a melody that will pull at the heartstrings. It's a song for anyone who's ever been in unrequited love and will fill your heart with joy and your eyes with tears.
The B-side is their already legendary cover version of The Streets' Never Went To Church, recorded at Mike Skinner's request, which manages to better the already excellent original. Yet it's the poignant romance of Made Up Love Song #43 that captures the heart and stays in the memory. The best things come from nowhere, indeed...
