I have just experienced a wonderful and enlightening love story that has moved me deeply. Indeed, Paulo Coelho's "By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept" is a must read for people who have lost, found, or still seeking for love.
I have made some references to this novel in some of my past blogs. But now, I am writing more about it on my personal realizations after experiencing this enigmatic literary work.

Most people enter the world of Paulo Coelho with Alchemist. I started with "Veronika decides to die" and then moved on to "By the river Piedra I sat down and wept".
I am just starting to read the Alchemist.
I really, really, loved the Veronika - it was an easy read with the very deep meaning that I could very much relate to.
I started reading By the River having the same expectations...and was a little bit disappointed, and this is why I gave this book 4 starts and not...more

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite writers, and this is the book where he hooked me for good.
The book tells the story of the cynical, urban working girl Pilar, who runs into her childhood best friend after many years and discovers a couple of pretty astonishing things, all right in a row: A) that he's been in love with her all his life, B) that he's entered the seminary, C) that he belongs to a strange spiritual cult dedicated to worshiping the feminine face of God, and D) that he can perfor...more

all i can say is.. i can totally relate to the book when i read it.. :p
the book tells a story about a young girl whose old flame was rekindled when she met her long lost friend. unfortunately, the friend is a would-be priest. it's funny when sometimes people do illogical things when it comes to love. she knew the consequences of falling in love with the man, of how her heart would be broken, and yet she was unable to stop herself, and continued to love him anyway.

I read about a quarter of the book, but it is basically referencing ideas of an Earth Mother, Goddess, Virgin Mother rubbish that made it impossible for me to swallow any of the rest of what I gather is a love story.
I remember enjoying The Alchemist by the same author, read years ago, but this novel with it's ideas of the feminine face of God and its shmatltzy Hallmark sayings of love and discovery were cheap. What annoyed me, and should have clued me in, was the authors note at the start o...more

A story about love and faith. When combined, they conquer all. It also goes into the feminine side of religions that are not often talked about, and how the symbol for the feminine body in faith is water. Interesting views.

- By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept
- Veronika Decides to Die
- The Fifth Mountain
Novel ini terbit tahun 1992, jauh sebelum The Da Vinci Code beredar.

Weepy, yes. Kinda made my heart throb. Ache, rather. I had this book photocopied and bound so I could share with someone. I must have wanted so badly to rub away the hurt and the coldness that swept through me while I was reading this sappy Coelho book-- I spilled Efficascent Oil all over the bound pages. Seven years later, I bought a new copy. Took me that long to forgive.
I have yet to reread the book, but I expect that like before, it will be another emotional journey. For those of you wh...more

Saya beli buku ini karena it's one of coelho's and it was supposed to be good. tapi entah kenapa, i've never finish reading this book.

"Rarely do we realize that we are in the midst of the extraordinary. Miracles occur all around us, signs from God show us the way, angels plead to be heard, but we pay little attentions to them because we have been taught that we must follow certain formulas and rules if we want to find God."

I don't recall the characters and the story exactly (my memory is jogged by other goodreads' members' reviews, though).
What I most remember about this book is that it celebrates the feminine principle of God. For about a week after I finished the book, my prayers were often automagically addressed to God as the Divine Feminine. Which to one reared as a Lutheran was both curious and confusing.

The second Paulo Coehlo book I had read after The Valkyries. Unfortunately, like The Valkyries, I am also not impressed with this one.
Why? Well, when I started reading the book, I was feeling nothing. When I finished reading it, I still felt nothing. In other words, it made no impact whatsoever. I also found the book's tone quite preachy about spirituality, religion, and mysticism...
Strike 2 for Paulo Coehlo! *Sighs*

surprised that it tackled religion, though with a really risky concept. on the other hand, the book really is inspirational (a self-help covered in fictional story). i don't think every people will like the book. if you are coelho fan, definitely you will like it. but depending on what situation you are in at the moment, the book somehow affects you and makes you want to look back into your life and reflect.

A love story telling of two sweethearts who at age 18 separate, when he goes on to travel the world and become a priest. She stays home to go to college and develop relationships with friends locally. They connect at one of his speeches and spend a week together falling in love and deciding to spend the rest of their lives together. A deep, philosophical, compelling poetic novel.

more than a journey-styled novel, this Coelho's is not only telling about forgiveness. forgiveness itself is a part of a holy divine subject of the almighty. this is called feminist side of god.
In most civilizations, god often be manifested in the form of a Father. but, trough this journey-novel, Coelho giving us the other form of god as a mother who takes care and loves us.
