Signs of Need

  • 120 million worldwide are hearing disabled; 160 million are visually disabled.

  • 1 in 5 children are learning disabled.

  • 1.8 million Americans over the age of 6 use a wheelchair.

  • 1.2 million athletes worldwide participate in the Special Olympics.

Signs of Hope

There are many excellent organizations working to help people with disabilities:

  • EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: The Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) has gone a long way to insure the rights of the disabled. The law now protects their rights to accessible housing, appropriate education, and job opportunities.

  • WORK: There are 4% more jobs for the disabled since 1991.

  • HELP: 41% of those who need "assistive" devices receive them as donations (that's wheelchairs, ramps, building accommodations to live with the disability).

75% of disabled adults under age 65 do not receive public assistance. They are dependent on the programs that allow them to lead rich and full lives. You can help the disabled by supporting one of the charities that is working to help them to participate fully in society.
