Signs of Need

  • More than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth grade level.

  • Students who spend 1 to 4 hours per week in extracurricular activities are 49% less likely to use drugs and 37% less likely to become teen parents.

Signs of Hope

Many excellent programs are helping teachers and students.

  • LITERACY: Helping adults improve their literacy skills has a "direct and measurable" impact on the education and quality of life of their children.

  • READING SCORES: There has been an increase in reading proficiency scores for 9 and 13 year olds since 1971. America Reads Challenge encourages all help all children learn to read.

  • AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: After-school and tutorial programs are not only helpful for getting students off the streets, but they're also improving test scores, overall achievement, and social skills.

  • LEARNING ABILITIES: New brain research has begun to identify many of the causes of learning disabilities. Educators are adapting curriculum to the many different ways students learn and beginning to erase the stigma associated with special education.
