Stephen L Harris is Professor and Chair, Department of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University, Sacramento. Harris is a fellow at the Westar Institute, was a fellow of the controversial Jesus Seminar, and has written numerous books, many of which are catered to introductory religious study scholars at public universities.

The back jacket of his textbook Understanding the Bible proclaims the work to be " the best-selling nonsectarian guide designed for students undertaking their first systematic study of the bible in the U.S.". It covers the Bible book by book, putting the work in a historical-critical context.

Harris received his PH.D. at Cornell University.
