In 2001, ANZ completed the acquisition of ANZ Amerika Samoa Bank (ASB; est. 1979) that it had begun in 1999. At the time of the acquisition, ASB was the second-largest bank in the country[citation needed] with a 44 percent market share. ASB has one overseas branch in Honolulu that it opened in 1997 to serve Samoans in Hawaii.
