St. John’s Jesuit Academy finished first yesterday in the Toledo Area MATHCOUNTS competion, held at the University of Toledo’s Nitschke Auditorium.
MATHCOUNTS, sponsored by the BP Toledo refinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, SSOE, Inc., and the University of Toledo’s college of engineering, is an annual math competition held nationally among middle school students. Twenty area schools and 200 students competed in this year’s regional event.
Finishing behind St. John’s in second place was McCord Junior High School of Sylvania, while Ottawa Hills Junior High School finished third. All three schools advanced to the state MATHCOUNTS competition on March 8 at Columbus State Community College.
Individually, Ottawa Hills’ Sid Dogra finished first, followed by McCord’s Eric Cheng and Ben Perlmutter of Timberstone Junior High School in Sylvania.
Individuals not on the competition’s top three teams who also advanced to the state competition were the Perlmutter youth, Perrysburg Junior High’s Andrew Sironko, Maumee Valley County Day School’s Sumit Banerjee, Gesu School’s Joey Yanos and Hannah Randolph, and Christ the King School’s Michael Dennis.
