It wasn’t quite as sunny and warm as June 6, 1977 nor were there quite as many fans, but Wednesday’s 1977 Championship Reunion Rally at Terry Schrunk Plaza in downtown Portland was special just the same.

In August 1976, Maurice Lucas arrived in Portland and invited his new teammates Bill Walton and Herm Gilliam to dinner at Jake's, a popular seafood restaurant. They had all met before—Lucas and Walton played in the Final Four together a few years earlier—but they weren't close friends.
Thirty years ago this June, the Portland Trail Blazers shocked the basketball world winning the NBA Championship over the heavily-favored Philadelphia 76ers, 4-2. With the national spotlight shining on Portland and the ensuing celebrations statewide, the 1977 NBA World Championship proved to be a defining moment for Portland, Oregon.
The Portland Trail Blazers lost a major chapter in their colorful past Jan. 30 with the death of Stuart K. Inman, the very first and, in my opinion, the very best talent scout the franchise has ever known.
