Alba Longa, city in ancient Latium; it was one of the oldest cities of Italy. According to Roman legend, it was founded (circa 1152 bc) by Ascanius, son of the Trojan hero Aeneas. The city was long the head of the ancient confederacy known as the Latin League. It is said to have been destroyed by the Romans under Tullus Hostilius (reigned 672-641 bc), the legendary third king of Rome, and was never rebuilt. Alba Longa was located on a rocky ridge on the western shore of Lake Albano; an ancient necropolis containing tombs from about 1100 bc has been found here.
