Colonel Karen S. Adams received her Baccalaureate degree in Political Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 1977. In 1978 she enlisted in the United States Army. After completing Officer Candidate School in 1980 she was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps. She received a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management and Organizational Development from Chapman University in 1991 and a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 2003. Colonel Adams has completed 28 years of active service.

Her assignments include Communications Platoon Leader, Battalion Signal Officer, and Service Support Company Commander for the 107th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Ord, California; Brigade Signal Officer for the 72d Field Artillery Brigade, Wertheim, Germany; Brigade Signal Officer for the Aviation Brigade, Fort Ord, California; and Communications Analyst Team Chief for the Joint Electronic Warfare Center, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. She also served as the Battalion Operations Officer and the Executive Officer of the 39th Signal Battalion, Chievres, Belgium. Following this assignment, Colonel Adams served as the Professor of Military Science, Army ROTC, Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas. She then commanded the 447th Signal Battalion, Fort Gordon, Georgia. Upon relinquishing command, Colonel Adams served as the Deputy Director, Strategic Communications, Office of the Army Chief Information Officer (CIO)/G-6 at the Pentagon. She next served as the Chief, Training and Mission Support Branch, Operations Division, Installation Management Command (IMCOM), Crystal City, Virginia. Following this assignment, Colonel Adams assumed command of the U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Gordon, Georgia.

Upon relinquishment of command, Colonel Adams assumed duties as the Deputy Region Director, Installation Management Command, Heidelberg, Germany.

Her awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Silver OLC), and the Army Commendation Medal (3 OCL).
