This was made using # 5 needle and #10 thread. Small heart is just rings and chains, but picots can be added where ever desired. When attaching the next heart to the last one you will have to cut some thread off the ball so the needle thread and the ball thread can be pulled through the rings. So please check the directions carefully as you work so you will know when to cut the thread. LR=Large Ring, LCH=long chain, R-ring, SCH=small chain, Ch=chain, Cl=close, RW=reverse work, - = picot, +=join
LR 10ds - 5ds - 5ds cl rw
LCh 30ds rw
R 8ds + (to side picot on large ring) 4ds - 4ds Cl rw
S Ch 2ds rw
R 4ds + (side picot of other sm ring) 4ds - 8ds Cl rw
LCh 30 ds rw
LR 5ds + 5ds + 10 ds Cl rw
Ch 10 ds slide off make sm ring of 3ds - 3ds cl make other half of chain 10ds Tie to first LR made cut hide ends.
Attaching each heart to the other. Follow pattern above for each attached heart.
Start your next large ring, but before closing it put the back through the long chain first, cl rw. Make the long chain, ring, sm chain, ring, long chain, *see next photo before making the last large ring.
This large ring also has to be closed around the other side long chain, before closing. * See next photo. ** At this point the ball thread will have to be cut off, so it can be pulled through the rings. Cut about 2 ½ feet off the first one to make sure you have enough. If it's more than you need then you will know to cut less off the next one.
The next chain you can make the whole thing then just pull it through the rings, to make it easier. The chain will go over the long chain of the first heart, under the ring, over the to joined together, under the other side and over the last chain.
**Make your chains this time with 13 ds - 13ds. Or if you want the small ring at the bottom of each chain still make 13 ds ring of 3 - 3 and 13 ds so it will fit through the piece nicely. Tie to the first large ring and start your next one and continue working up until desired length of book mark.
*Remember if you want the last heart added. it can have picots at the top long chains to make it a bit fancier.
The tassel I made for my book mark was made with a Celtic knot at the end. Make 80 or so ds, the knot is basically the SLT which makes the first half of the knot, then the top half SLT and then join together. SLT=Shoe Lace Trick, just the first half of the knot as when you tie your shoes.
I then used the JK (Josephine Knot) to make the long tail, which can be made to desired length. Attach to the small picot on the bottom small ring of the first heart.
JK, is making the first half of the ds over and over again for required number of stitches. Make 20 or so first half's, and let them twist to the right, make some more and let them twist, keep making for required number of half stitches.
