THE SCOTTY BOWMAN SHOWCASE
The event is named after the legendary Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history, and showcases the best high school aged hockey players from Buffalo and Rochester. Rochester took home the Bowman Cup for the first time in the history of the three-year old showcase, as the Rochester Senior hockey team defeated the Buffalo Seniors by a score of 4-3 in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000 spectators at HSBC Arena on Sunday. Rochester never trailed in the game as the line of Shayne Stockton, who played with the Jr. Amerks, Steven Wrobel from Gates Chili, and Rothfuss dominated the Buffalo seniors. The trio, led by Stockton's hat trick, had all four Rochester goals and added four assists on the day. Buffalo had made a valiant comeback to tie the score, before Rothfuss' heroics. Down 3-1 late in the third, Williamsville North Senior, Ryan Geary rebounded a shot past Batavia senior, Mike Battaglia, with just 3:35 remaining. Nick Panepinto from Kenmore West then tied the game with 1:58 remaining.
Coaches for the Scotty Bowman Showcase will be Grant Ledyard (Buffalo Seniors), Larry Playfair (Buffalo Juniors), Craig Charron (Rochester Seniors) and Scott Metcalfe (Rochester Juniors). To start the day off, Canisius College head coach Dave Smith hosted an NCAA presentation focusing on how high school hockey players can better prepare themselves for the move to the collegiate level. Information for the fourth annual Scotty Bowman Showcase has not yet been released. |
