Greater St. Louis is the common name of the St. Louis-St.Charles-Farmington, MO-IL CSA or Metro St. Louis area. Greater St. Louis is the 16th largest in the United States, population 2,858,549 ) The region includes the independent City of St. Louis, the counties of Missouri counties: Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Louis County (which does not include the City of St. Louis), Saint Charles, St. Francois, Warren, and Washington. The Illinois counties of Madison, Saint Clair, Clinton, Monroe, Jersey, Bond, Calhoun and Macoupin. Population statistics are shown below.

[edit] New Greater St. Louis Counties
As of now, four new counties have entered the St. Louis Area, 1 in Missouri (Washington), and 3 in Illinois (Bond, Calhoun, and Macoupin). Although the population of all four of the new counties are much smaller than the rest of the existing counties in the St. Louis Metro Area, they are growing much faster than the other counties-- for example, in Washington County, Missouri, the employment rate grew 66.7% between 1990 to 1999, so these counties may still be small, they will not be in 5-15 years time. Calhoun County, in Illinois, has the smallest population among the new counties in the Greater St. Louis.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 21.4 percent of the adult population in St. Louis holds a bachelors degree compared with the national average of 27 percent. Almost 209,000 students are enrolled in the area's nearly 40 colleges universities and technical schools. Washington University in St. Louis which is one of the top research universities in the nation, internationally known for its schools of Medicine, Architecture, Social Work and Law; the University's school of law is the oldest continuously operating law school west of the Mississippi. In 2006 approximately 5,287 associates degrees were granted, almost a third of these from the St. Louis Community Colleges. As the largest Community college system in the state of Missouri, more than half of the households in St. Louis have at least one member who attended or attends the college. University of Missouri–St. Louis is the major comprehensive public university in Greater St. Louis and more than 20 percent of all St. Louis area residents with a bachelor degree attended UM-St. Louis.[citation needed]The region has a diverse range of institutions of higher learning including, the Jesuit Catholic university Saint Louis University which is the oldest university west of the Mississippi.
Webster University (the largest institution, by enrollment, of higher learning in the region), Maryville University, Fontbonne University, the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis), Aquinas Institute of Theology (a Dominican seminary and graduate school), Concordia Seminary (the largest American seminary for the Lutheran Church), Covenant Theological Seminary (a seminary for the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), and Missouri Baptist University, a small Christan college, Harris-Stowe State University, the city's only historically black college, and one of four in the Midwest.
Logan College of Chiropractic is located in Chesterfield and is one of the top Chiropractic colleges in the nation is known for graduating Chiropractic Physicians and researchers.
