The Archdiocese of Madrid is part of the Catholic Church in Madrid. The Diocese of Madrid was founded on 7 March 1885 by Pope Leo XIII out of the Archdiocese of Toledo.[1] It was raised to the level of an archdiocese on 25 March 1964 by Pope Paul VI. Pope John Paul II gave the Archdiocese Metropolitan status on 23 July 1991. The current Archbishop of Madrid since 28 July 1994 is His Eminence Antonio Cardinal Rouco Varela.[2]
