Marcel Goc (IPA: /gŏch/) (born August 24, 1983 in Calw, West Germany) is a NHL player currently playing center for the San Jose Sharks. He was drafted in the 1st round, 20th overall by the Sharks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, though he remained in Germany until 2003. He spent all of the 2003–2004 season with the Cleveland Barons, the Sharks' then minor league affiliate, but joined the Sharks during the 2004 playoffs. He holds the franchise record in Cleveland for longest assist streak (7 games). He has played for Team Germany in numerous tournaments, including the 2000 (as a sixteen-year-old) and 2001 World Junior Championships, the 2001 U18 Championships, the 2002 World Junior tournament, the 2003 Swiss Cup, the 2005 World Championships and the 2006 Winter Olympics. Touted for his defensive prowess and faceoff skills, Goc looks to be a fixture on Team Germany for many years.
Goc has 2 brothers who also play professional hockey. Sascha Goc has played for Team Germany as well, and a younger brother Nikolai, who alongside Sascha plays for the Hannover Scorpions.
Goc is in the final year of a two-year-contract worth US$1.575 million, signed in July 2006.
During the 2007–08 NHL season, Goc is writing a semi-weekly blog about his experiences with the Sharks.[1]
[edit] Playoff success
Goc will always be remembered in San Jose for his playoff performance debut in the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In his first NHL game, Game 5 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the St. Louis Blues, Goc assisted on the series-clinching goal by deflecting the puck away from Blues goaltender Chris Osgood and right to Mark Smith. Then, in his second game, Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Colorado Avalanche, he scored the series-clinching goal by deflecting a shot past Avalanche goaltender David Aebischer.
