Indira Gandhi was returned to power. Sanjay Gandhi was killed in a plane crash and Rajiv began work for Indian Airlines. India faced a new form of 'internal conflict' which in later years would more popularly be known as 'Terrorism'. The religious extremism came in the form of Bhindranwale's Sikh militancy calling for a Sikh homeland, Khalistan. Some Indians begin to doubt the alliance with the Soviet Union disguised as the being in the non-aligned movment. One of the most controversial reports on education was submitted in December this year by Mandal. It was ignored until 10 years later, when students took a great notice of this report.

The rise in oil prices across the globe increased oil expenses threefold. A recent report suggests that thousands of Indians were moving to the Gulf and pouring in millions of dollars in our forex reserves. Indira Gandhi eased the restrictions on private businesses in India. Until now, a computer science engineer from Bangalore had to make half a dozen trips to delhi and collect 50 permits to import a computer from abroad.
