[edit] Conflict with Media

In June 2006, allegations of Foxconn operating abusive employment practices came to light as reported by an London based tabloid, which had been sued by the British Royal Family and Elton John.

Apple launched an investigation into such claims. The result was that the claims of mistreatment of employees were judged by the Apple inspection team to be largely unfounded.

During the whole episode, Foxconn was attached publicly by Journalists in China and some of the exaggerated attached had been over the edge that Foxconn was forced to file suit against some of these offending journalists after initial communication failed (Wang You and Weng Bao of China Business News); some of these false statements including describing Foxconn employees as "wake up earlier than rooster", "leave work later than hooker", "work harder than donkey" and "being fed worse than pigs" among others.

The original demand was for $3.77 million with Foxconn pledge to donate all proceed to public cause. Foxconn had lodged a successful Chinese court ruling to have the journalists' assets frozen. Many think the astronomical demands and the court ruling were absurd.

To make its point, later Foxconn reduced the demand to a symbolic 1 yuan (12 U.S. cents), withdrew the request to freeze the journalists' personal assets, and initiated legal proceedings to sue their employer. The whole episode ended with both side make joint press release with the both journalists publicly apologize for making false statements and where Foxconn promised to give more respect to the press. Many have heralded these turn of events as evidence of media abusiveness met its check and balance.
