- 1 January - Burma was presented to Queen Victoria as a birthday gift, after the country was annexed into British India in November, 1885.
- 18 January - British Hockey Association founded.[1]
- 27 January - Salisbury loses supports of the Irish Party, and resigns as Prime Minister.[1]
