The dawn service and march will bring us together this ANZAC Day
Friday 25 April 2008
It’s a time of reflection, of thankfulness, of remembrance. It’s ANZAC Day in Brisbane. And in 2008, 93 years after that fateful landing on Gallipoli beach, we will gather in the city centre and many of the suburbs and towns to pay our respects to our servicemen and women.
Each year it feels as if the ANZAC Day march gets bigger and more important in our cultural landscape. Take the kids, grab a flag and cheer on the passing parade as it weaves through the CBD. The march starts at 10am on the corner of Queen Street Mall and George Street.
It then proceeds along George Street, right into Adelaide Street, right into Creek Street, and will disband at the corner of Creek Street and Queen Street.
The city’s more sombre dawn service will take place at exactly 4.28am on 25 April at the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square, Adelaide Street.
Friday 25th April is a public holiday.
Road closures for the service and march will apply.
There are special transport services in place for people to attend the dawn service. TransLink has the details or call 13 12 30.
Veterans in uniform or wearing their service medals are entitled to free public transport. Accompanying spouses can also travel for free. Family members wearing service medals who are marching on behalf of a veteran are also entitled.
Plus there will be extra transport services for the ANZAC Day parade.
Many shops and businesses are closed on ANZAC Day.
Most pubs or venues with a liquor licence will not open before 1pm on ANZAC Day, with the exception of RSL and Services clubs. Venues need to close at midnight the night before.
ANZAC Day sees dozens of services and marches arranged. Find one near you in the Brisbane region.
