Southern Illinois University is a state university located in southern Illinois with two institutions and multiple campuses. Glenn Poshard is President of Southern Illinois University.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University system and is located in Carbondale, Illinois. SIUC operates the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale and the School of Medicine in Springfield. Rated as one of the nation’s premier research institutions in rankings by The Carnegie Foundations for the Advancement of Teaching, SIUC is home to over 20,000 students who enroll in 186 academic programs.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is the Edwardsville, Illinois campus of the university. In addition to a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, the institution features a new but highly regarded College of Pharmacy, a School of Dental Medicine at Alton and a center in East St. Louis that provides clinical and practicum experiences for SIUE students in the arts, education, health, and social services.

The main campus in Edwardsville is situated on 2,660 acres (10.8 km²), with bicycle and walking paths throughout. SIUE is home to 13,500 students. At one time, SIUE was known as a "commuter school", but in recent years has transformed itself into a residential university.

SIUE celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007.
