[edit] History

Bond University
Bond University

Bond University was founded in 1987 by Alan Bond and given its university status by Queensland's Bond University Act.[2] It also operated Bond South Africa, a degree-awarding campus in South Africa, until 2004.[3]

The campus is bounded by Lake Orr to the east and north, and its site had previously been undeveloped scrub and swamp land. The campus is located beside the Varsity Lakes business precinct. The predominant campus structure is a large sandstone arch that includes the executive office building, and bridges the gap between the Humanities and Main Library building.

Bond was listed by Forbes magazine as one of the most expensive universities in the world in 2008, and the most expensive in Australia.[4] Forbes magazine however, did not take into account that the Bond academic year is three semesters as opposed to two, thus presenting the price of tuition to be a whole 50% more than it actually is compared to other universities.[5] It should also be noted, that many of Bond's programs are cheaper than programs at public universities. For example, tuition per course in the Faculty of Law at Bond is $3120 AUD[6] as compared to a law subject at the University of Melbourne at $3,413.[7]

[edit] Medicine

In May 2006, Prime Minister John Howard opened the $20 million Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine (though the first intake of students started in May 2005), housing a complete set of lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, specialised clincical rooms and laboratories. As one of the few undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine degrees offered in Australia, Bond's three-semesters-per-year schedule means a medical student studying at the University can graduate in four years and eight months (as opposed to six years at most other universities). The course is the most expensive undergraduate degree offered by an Australian university.[8]

[edit] Legal Skills

The Faculty of Law includes a Legal Skills Centre with moot courts and technology such as video conferencing rooms.[9] The Centre was opened in 2007 by Australian Attorney General Phillip Ruddock,[10] and was constructed at a cost of over AU$10 million dollars.[11] The Centre is primarily used when students participate in practical legal exercises like mooting and mediation as part of the Legal Skills subject, which is completed incrementely throughout the study of a law degree.[12]

[edit] Sustainable development

The School of Sustainable Development will be located in a green building to be opened in late 2008. The building will be the first Australian university facility to receive a six-star energy rating.[13]

[edit] Hotel, resort and tourism management

The School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management will open in 2009, and offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The school will operate with Marriott International as its industry partner, establishing the first such partnership for an Australian university and a hotel company.[14][15]

[edit] Students

Bond University is small by Australian standards with around 2,800 students, 40% of whom are international students. The current student to teacher ratio is about 10:1, the lowest in Australia and one of the lowest globally.[citation needed] The university operates on a standard three trimester timetable each year, with intakes each January, May and September. This accelerated program allows a six trimester degree to be completed in two years; an eight trimester degree (such as Law) to be completed in two years and eight months.

Bond University offers accommodation to approximately 700 students in its halls of residence and other buildings.
