Karol Wojtyla, born in the southern Polish village of Wadowice on May 18, 1920, was the son of an army sergeant. He had a strict, religious upbringing. A theater lover, football player and a good skier, Karol Wojtyla, chose to study theology (in secret) during World War II and eventually ordained as a priest in 1946.
