Jacques-Édouard Alexis (born 21 September 1947, in Gonaïves) is the prime minister of Haiti. He was nominated by President René Préval on 21 May 2006, and during the next three weeks, his nomination was ratified almost unanimously by both houses of parliament. He and his cabinet were sworn in on 9 June 2006. He previously served as Préval's prime minister from 26 March 1999 to 7 February 2001.
Alexis is a university graduate from the Faculty of Agronomics and Veterinary Medicine at the State University of Haiti and was the first rector of the University of Quisqueya (1990-1995). Before succeeding to the premiership, he was Minister for National Education, Youth and Sport.
His second government consists of a coalition of six parties, including Préval's Lespwa party, the Fusion of Haitian Social Democrats, the Struggling People's Organization, and Jean-Bertrand Aristide's Fanmi Lavalas party.[1]
